This may seem like an unusual time to begin a blog because in some ways it feels like the end of a journey and in others the start of a new one. 2014 has been a year of firsts and a year of worsts. First marathon, first triathlon, first student owned ipads in school. First ipad breakage followed by more, first bad Ofsted experience, then the wait, still waiting.
So basically this blog starts with a PB, albeit an unexpected one. Telford parkrun, a weekly 5k, time 18:45, nearly 45 seconds from the previous best time. How?
A conversation with a fellow runner a few weeks previous we discussed the demerits of running quickly to the parkrun. That day I had left it late and ran there just in time to stop the watch and restart it again as the run began. What a struggle! A personal worst for the year.
So this week a new tactic. Slow and steady to the park, it's about 3 miles, there about ten minutes before the start, nice and relaxed and then off. 18 minutes and about 5 seconds later I looked at the watch and nearly fell over. Raced to the end and double checked and still didn't quite believe it until the email came through later.
So there you go, do a nice easy warm up, give yourself plenty of time and give it a go. It might work for you. Personally I may have to retire from 5K running now, or maybe there was a bit more left in the tank...who knows?
